. james, pretty good. there is a party going on, jack kemp foundation is having a party and marco rubio is speaking. paul ryan is speaking. they both want to have complete makeovers. you know -- marco rubio doesn't want to be the hispanic guy who talks about immigration. and paul ryan doesn't want to be the grinch that stole medicare. paul ryan is standing there right now. what do you think? are these guys going to succeed? are they the future? >> if i was paul ryan, i would want to be something else. if i was selected vice president and i got slaughtered in my -- and my candidate got slaughtered in my home state, i would be looking to have a makeover also. i don't blame him. i think that senator rubio could run on anything he wants. i agree. if he wants to run on economic expertise, perceived economic expertise, it's a good thing for him to do it. he should do that. it's apparently what he believed before. if paul ryan wants to believe that the best thing to make a child study is a toothache, that's what he believed before. if he wants to change his mind, that's his business too. i don
the presidential mansion just up the block. then just two saturdays ago, florida senator marco rubio was showing a little leg in iowa showing this early nominating state where he broke a fundraising record for the governor there. on tuesday night, this week, rubio and another potential gop heir apparent, congressman paul ryan are looking to get their political weight up by laying out their respective road maps for the jack kemp foundation. republicans ready to turn the page are introducing their new class of hopefuls, nice and early. it's a big class. a herd if you will of elephants stampeding toward 2016. there are those whose ethnic heritage alone will help to put a new face on the gop. in addition to senator rubio, there's new mexico governor susanna martinez, louisiana governor bobby jindal, south carolina governor nicki hailey and brian sandoval. two of the contenders intersect with the contingent of women would-be nominees. along with minnesota congressman michele bachmann. she isn't the only do over on the list. she's joined by fellow pennsylvania senator rick santorum and texas governor
to both of you. if i can start with you,ç jonathan, paul ryan and marco rubio spoke to a group of conservatives last night. they talked about helping the poor get into the middle class. in fact, i think we have a shot of paul ryan helping the poor. yes, there he is, in a soup kitchen during a campaign photo op. as we know, it was all just talk. when are we going to start hearing substance from these men or any republicans, for that matter? >> paul ryan would say he's been talking substance for a long time on these issues. it's just that we don't like what he's saying. we don't like his prescriptions for how he would help the poor. personally, i think paul ryan -- >> how does it help the poor by stripping meals on wheels, remove pell grants, how does that help the poor? >> that's a question for congressman ryan. i'm telling you from his mindset, his perspective, one way to help people and the economy is to ensure the country is on sound financial fiscal footing. the way he wants to go about it would devastate the very people he says he wants to help reach the middle class and ac
-minded conservatives to the senate. marco rubio, rand paul, johnson and ted cruz. >> i've played a role in stocking the senate with solid conservatives who are younger and brighter and better spokesmen than i am. and so i know i'm leaving the senate better than i found it. >> reporter: but demint also infuriated republican leaders by backing several gop primary candidates who could not win their senate seats. remember christine o'donnell? cnn is told senate republican leader mitch mcconnell was annoyed for backing o'donnell and a couple other losing candidates in 2010 and cost republicans the majority. at the time demint told us he was unapologetic and still is. you're trying to send a message to the gop establishment. >> the gop establishment is out. and what we're going to do is help the american people take back their government. >> reporter: in the flood of gop reaction to demint's surprise retirement, he didn't have to read between the lines much in the gop leader's three-sentence statement to see some hard feelingsthanking demint for his service and another who called demint a friend. >> i've
. and both of them are trying to do personal makeovers and makeovers for the party. marco rubio who i think is in a tier in his own, so far ahead of anybody else if he decides to run, he's worried about just being the hispanic candidate. so he's going to start adding substantive accomplishments to his record. he has a two-year plan between now and 2014, november of 2014 to try to notch some specific accomplishments on immigration and on the economic front. so if and when he does run for president, he's not just the great communicator in the eyes of republicans, but somebody that has substantive accomplishments. for paul ryan, he doesn't want to be the austerity guy. so he too is looking at poverty, looking at immigration, and other issues to broaden his own portfolio. we have a great nugget in the piece about how in the campaign he wanted to go in inner cities, talk about poverty, and he got slapped back by the romney folks who said there's no constituency, there's no votes, we're not focusing on those issues. >> what's the next act for paul ryan coming off a losing vice presidential bid? w
